What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeship is a job-focused professional education pathway to develop highly skilled workers capable of meeting the demands of a specific job role. It combines supervised on-the-job training (provided by participating business) with related technical instruction (provided by one of the education partners, e.g., community colleges).
WHY APPRENTICESHIP?
Apprentices work alongside experienced veterans and leverage the institutional knowledge of current employees alongside theoretical learning from the classroom. On-the-job training forms a major component of the apprenticeship and leads to a high likelihood of confirmed employment at the end of the program – a win-win for employers as well as employees.
Apprenticeship provides a path to progress from basic skills knowledge to the level demanded for a given occupation.
Programs vary in time from one to six years.
Employers determine the content of the training programs and define the skill benchmarks to progress in the apprenticeship program.
Progressive wage scale for participants provides clear incentive for completion of the program.
